Valheim Servers: How to Pick One That Fits Your Group
The SV Games Valheim directory snapshot observed 6309 online Valheim servers as of 2026-09-15T02:25:00.028Z, with 5063 in Europe and 1118 in North America. This is observed SV Games directory inventory, not the entire Valheim ecosystem. The harder question is which of those servers deserves your evening. Here is how to read the snapshot before you click Play.
Decision checklist before you connect:
What the observed Valheim directory actually contains
The snapshot shows 6309 online Valheim servers. Of those, 5063 are in Europe, 1118 in North America, 86 in Asia, 24 in Oceania, and 16 in South America. That distribution should shape your expectations. If you play from Asia, Oceania, or South America, the list of nearby Valheim servers is thin in our observed directory, and you may end up connecting to Europe or North America anyway.
Start from the Valheim servers for cooperative survival and building page and filter there. Crawler ping is measured from the SV Games crawler to each server. It is not a forecast of your connection. The p90 of 99 ms and median of 49 ms tell you the servers in the sample respond reasonably fast from where our crawler sits. Your own ping will be higher if you are far from the region. Use the number as a rough sorting signal, not a promise.
Population is where the snapshot gets blunt: verified players now comes back as 0. That does not mean nobody plays Valheim. It means our observation did not verify active players at the moment of the snapshot. Treat it as unknown, not as a dead game. Population counts in third-party directories can be stale or hidden, so this is a data gap, not a verdict.
No wipe evidence was observed, with 0 reporting servers and 0 detected changes in the last 7 days. Again: this does not mean Valheim servers never wipe. It means our crawler did not detect wipe activity in the observed window. If you are joining a long-running community server, ask in their Discord whether they reset the world after major updates. That answer will not come from any directory.
Step 1: Decide what kind of Valheim you want to play
Valheim is not one server type. It is at least four, and they attract different people.
Co-op survival servers are the default. Small groups, shared base, bosses spaced out over weeks. If you have two or three friends, this is the easiest path: host or rent, invite, done. Public servers in this category can be hit or miss, and that is why third-party directories exist in the first place.
Public community servers are the ones you find through directories. They tend to be larger, sometimes modded, and often run rules: no griefing, no map sharing, certain boss progression gates. Read the server description before joining. A public server with no rules listed is usually a public server with no moderation.
Dedicated modded servers change the game substantially. The observed Valheim snapshot shows no mods at all, so do not expect our directory to tell you which mods a server runs. You will need to check the server's own listing or Discord. If modded Valheim interests you, look at how other survival sandboxes handle mod visibility in directories before you assume Valheim is the outlier.
PvP servers are a minority. They attract a specific crowd and often run as community-organized events rather than persistent arenas. If PvP is your goal, check whether a server actually advertises PvP rules before you join, because many Valheim communities are built around cooperation instead.
Step 2: Filter by region and read the ping honestly
With 5063 of 6309 observed servers in Europe, your default mental model should be Europe-first. North America has 1118, which is plenty if you play during North American hours. Asia's 86 servers and Oceania's 24 will feel scarce. South America's 16 is the thinnest observed region.
The crawler median of 49 ms is measured from our infrastructure to the server. If you are in Sydney and the server is in Frankfurt, your real ping will not be 49 ms. It might be playable for building and exploring, and painful for parrying. Cross-region play is more workable in a slower combat game than in one built around frame-perfect reactions, but if you plan to fight bosses, connect to your own region when you can.
One practical trick: ignore the exact ping number at first and sort by region. Then test the top two or three candidates in person. You will learn more in five minutes of actual play than from any directory column.
Step 3: Check wipe risk before you build
Valheim bases take hours. Losing one to a wipe is one of the most common reasons players quit a server. The observed snapshot detected 0 wipe changes across 0 reporting servers in the last 7 days, which is a clean observation window but not a guarantee of permanence.
What to ask a server owner or check in their listing:
If the answer is "we never wipe" with no elaboration, ask a follow-up. Not every server wipes, but every server owner has thought about it, and the policy matters more than the slogan.
For contrast on how another survival game presents server options, browse 7 Days to Die servers for zombie survival and building. Some communities prefer a fresh start on a schedule, and those games make it explicit in their listings. Valheim's community often leans the other way: persistent worlds with slow progression.
Step 4: Understand the mod situation, and its limits
The observed Valheim directory shows no mods. That is a data fact, not a statement about the game. Valheim has a modding scene, but many popular mods run client-side, and server-side mod visibility in directories is inconsistent across games.
Compare with the Squad snapshot, where one mod, Galactic Contention, appears on 27 observed servers. That kind of visibility exists when a game's modding ecosystem concentrates on a few server-side frameworks. Valheim's does not, at least not in our directory yet.
What this means for you: do not rely on any directory to tell you whether a Valheim server is modded. Join the server's Discord, read the pinned messages, and ask. If the server requires a mod pack, install it before you connect, or you will spend your first twenty minutes troubleshooting instead of playing.
If you want a modded survival experience where server-side mods are easier to spot, look at ARK servers for survival on TheIsland, Ragnarok, and more. It is a different game, but the discovery workflow is smoother there.
Step 5: Match server culture to your play style
This is the step most guides skip, and it is the one that determines whether you stay past day two.
Some Valheim servers are social. People build a shared village, run farms, decorate. Others are expedition-focused: everyone gears up, sails somewhere, fights a boss, comes home. Others are quiet solo-with-company servers where nobody talks and everyone builds their own base. None of these is wrong, but they are incompatible.
Read the server description for verbs. "Cooperative," "chill," "builders welcome" all point one direction. "Progression races," "hardcore," "no portals" point another. If the description is three words and a Discord link, join the Discord and read the rules channel. Five minutes there saves you a weekend.
Also check the time zone of the admin. A server with an active admin in your time zone gets faster answers when something breaks. A server whose admin sleeps when you play will feel abandoned even if it is not.
Step 6: What to do when Valheim's options run out
Sometimes the right Valheim server does not exist for your situation. If you are in South America with 16 observed servers and none of them match your schedule, the honest move is to consider a different survival game.
If you want a smaller, tighter co-op experience, Core Keeper Servers - Multiplayer Dungeon Exploration tend to run small groups and short sessions. If you want survival horror with a different rhythm, Browse active Barotrauma servers offer something Valheim cannot. And if you want a modded survival world with clearer server-side mod signals, the ARK link above is a reasonable next stop.
None of these are Valheim. But the goal is not to play Valheim. The goal is to find a game server worth your evening, and that is a broader search.
The short version
Valheim servers are abundant in our observed directory, especially in Europe. Ping from the crawler looks healthy at a 49 ms median, but that is not your ping. Verified player counts came back unknown in the snapshot, so trust your own eyes in the server browser more than any column. Wipes were not detected in the observation window, but that is not a promise. Mods are not visible in the Valheim snapshot at all, so ask the server directly.
Pick your region. Confirm the wipe policy. Join the Discord before you commit a base location. And if the right server is not there, look at what other survival games are offering. Your evening is the scarce resource here, not the server list.
